Mo Yi

 

Born 1958. Located in Beijing, China

 

Mo Yi is one of the most influential photography artists in China. He was described by Gu Zheng as "one of the poles of contemporary Chinese photography of 1980s " and formally launched the vigorous 1980s' contemporary Chinese photography.

 

As an ethnographer, (Wu Hung), Mo Yi has been capturing the people on stairs, in train carriages and in the streets for the past 30 years (1987 till now). In 1986, he declared, “Photography is not art,” subsequently he uses cameras as a gear to capture the bold and uncanny images, which visually represent the mutated and distorted individuals and environments in the political and economical transformations and the distress of the city. Mo Yi appended himself to the era with his visual language of representation and the depiction of the era and self, and his artworks are his sincerity to the world and his meaning of life. Henceforward by understanding Mo Yi, one understands the most avant-garde and most significant art creation in contemporary Chinese photography, and moreover, the most straightforward and the most genuine era of the1980s and the 1990s of China.

 

For more than 30 years of art practice, Mo Yi’s artworks have been exhibited worldwide. During the past couple of years, his works amazed the audience at art venues like TYKYO PHOTO and PHOTO LOS ANGELES; in 2013 his works interested Tate Modern and are scheduled to be collected; in the 1990s NHK Channel did a documentary on him twice; a great many of his artworks are collected by the Asian Art Archive, the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, International Center of Photography, New York, Museum of Fine Arts Houston and ZEIT-FOTO SALON in Japan.

莫 毅

（1958-    ，现工作生活于：中国北京）

 

中国最重要的当代摄影艺术家之一。顾铮曾称之为“中国80年代摄影的两极之一”[1]，并正式开启了中国80年代勃发的当代摄影艺术。

 

一如他所实践的“民族志学者”[2]（巫鸿），楼梯间，车厢，街道上的人群，是他三十多年（1987－至今）创作里的每一个表情。1986年，继他提出”摄影不是艺术”的宣言之后，镜头这个工具被不断“玩烂”，创作出了具有冲击力和诡异的影像，呈现出政治和经济转变中，城市压抑下异化扭曲的个体和环境。他艺术语言表达下的影像，描绘了时代和自身，他把自己与时代陪绑，作品是他对这个世界的诚意和生活着的全部意义。了解莫毅，相当于研读了中国当代摄影史上最先锋和最重要的艺术创作；以及中国的最直接和最真实的80、90年代。

 

30多年的艺术实践中，莫毅的作品在全球范围内展出，近两年间在TOKYO PHOTO ,PHOTO LOS ANGLOUS 等重要的艺术盛会上大放光彩；2013年，其作品被Tate Modern相中，计划纳入馆藏；90年代NHK日本朝日电视台两度为其制作专题纪录片；其他诸多作品被亚洲艺术文献库，美国大都会美术馆，纽约摄影艺术中心，休斯顿美术馆，日本“ZEIT—FOTO SALON”等收藏。

1982年，莫毅开始自学摄影。

进入城市生活后，他逐渐拍摄了一系列风景，人物等主题的作品；作品的视线逐渐聚焦在人群和单独的面孔，环境是“印象”里淡淡的语境。多年后回首这批被称为《印象》的作品，我们能找到太多他日后创作的线索：或麻木，或惊恐的脸孔；没有情绪，又似在压抑情绪的背影；呐喊的人；或者笼中的鸟……
